Hohhot is famous for the boundlessness grasslands
out of the city. The main grasslands cover three areas. Xilamuren, 80
kilometers (50 miles) north of Hohhot, is the most popular. Huitengxile,
120 kilometers (75 miles) west, and Gegentala, 150 kilometers (93 miles)
north, are less visited.
The basic accommodation in grasslands is in a traditional
Mongol yurt tent. The meals mainly comprise delicious stuffed dumplings,
aromatic mutton dishes and sweet tea. Horse riding, wrestling and dancing
shows maybe followed after dinner.
During July and August every year, Nadam is held
on everywhere of the grasslands. Nadam is the grandest of the Mongolian
people's traditional fairs. In addition to the competitive sports of horse
race, arrow shooting and wresting, there are now polo, horsemanship demonstrations,
track and field sports, national song and dance performances, movies,
play and performances by horseback cultural troupes.
